Dental Implants: Beautiful Smiles with Improved Function

Battle Ground Full Mouth Reconstruction

December 9, 2022

You go in for your interview. As you smile at the interview, you can feel her staring at your mouth. She’s still smiling politely, but you can see that she’s judging you based on your missing teeth. You’re nervous for the rest of the interview, and you later wonder if a better smile would have won you the job.

You’re careful not to smile too widely in any of the photos on your dating profile, but when you meet your dates in person, they know. Are they horrified? Are they wondering why you’re missing teeth? Do they think less of you because your smile isn’t perfect?

If your missing teeth are affecting your career, your social life, or your ability to eat, life can feel hopeless. You need to replace your missing teeth, but you don’t want to damage healthy teeth to place a bridge. If you’re missing a few teeth and want an option that gives you great form and function, dental implants may be your best option.

What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a tooth replacement that replaces the entire tooth, including the root. This has the advantage of preserving your gums and jaw bone from further injury.

Most implants have three parts: a shaft, an abutment, and a crown. The crown is the top part of the prosthetic. It is made from a ceramic that looks and feels like your other teeth. The abutment connects the crown to the shaft, and the shaft replaces the root. It is surgically implanted in your jaw so that it provides a comfortable, secure replacement for your missing tooth.

How many visits does it take to get an implant?

After your initial consultation, you’ll have an appointment to place the shaft. The shaft must integrate with the surrounding bone, which takes 3 to 6 months. Once the mouth has healed, it's time to complete the implant with a crown. The crown is attached to the abutment and you have a brand new tooth that looks like it’s completely natural.

How long do implants last?

After the implant heals, the screw has become part of your mouth. Since they’re usually made of titanium, the ‘root’ of the implant will last for the rest of your life. Crowns last varying amounts of time depending on where they are in your mouth and how you use them – much like real teeth. Some crowns fail 10-15 years after placement. However, with an implant, replacing the crown is quick and painless.

How many implants can a person get?

You can get as many implants as you need throughout your life. Some people, who've had cancer or been in an accident, for example, may need a full-mouth restoration. Most patients only need one or two implants. They realize that implants are an excellent way to protect chewing and speaking functions while keeping an engaging, beautiful smile.

Am I a good candidate for dental implants?

The only way to see if you’re a good candidate for implants is to come in for a consultation. Some people are ready for implants right away, others may need help fighting infection or restoring gums and jaws before their body can handle implants. Your smile, and your future, is important to our team. Call today and schedule a consultation so that you can start the implant process and have a smile that helps you achieve your dreams.
